Writing Prompts

Writing Prompts

Stuck trying to write? Here are some ideas. I tried to include as many genres as possible, and tried to range from emotional plots to action plots. If you use one, you should totally let me know, especially if you post it somewhere! A heist goes wrong because of bees. A love triangle between two people and a very specific sandwich. Who will win the pie-eating contest? Is it the super tiny girl? The sumo-wrestler? Only time will tell. The…

The “Micronovel”

The “Micronovel”

My first fiction assignment of the semester came from my least favorite professor, so this might have colored my initial impression of the so-called “micronovel.” A micronovel, he said, should be a short story comprised of several scenes short enough to text someone (although, I think he was flying fast and loose with ‘short enough to text,’ because we were not limited to 140 characters). As he says for all of his assignments, it shouldn’t be too symbolic or melodramatic, but…

Goodbye, Whole30

Goodbye, Whole30

WE MADE IT! Sort of. Yesterday was our last official day of Whole30, except that we had beans on Monday. And grains. And a lil bit of dairy. It was a burrito. But it was a delicious burrito, and I did 4 complete weeks of Whole30 and I felt (and still feel) PRETTY AWESOME. I lost 8 lbs and 2.5 inches on my waist, which is amazing, and so close to my goal weight (just another 6-7 more lbs). I…

Fish Stew

Fish Stew

Oh my god I have THREE DAYS LEFT OF WHOLE30 and I’m not sure what to do with myself. Things I am craving: Tacos Corn Things I am surprised to not be craving: Cheese Sweets Things I have no need to crave because they are compliant: THIS FISH STEW We ate this and basically died. That’s all I can even say about it. It was SO SO SO GOOD. It was hearty, and filling, and compliant, and amazing. Frequently—and this…

Whole30 Update & Recipe List

Whole30 Update & Recipe List

As we near the end of Whole30 (ONLY SIX MORE DAYS), we are getting a little bit…lazy with cooking. I have not been creating as many recipes so much as following others, and my life is getting a little bit more hectic now that the semester’s started again, so I’m getting tired of not being able to eat out and having to bring a duffel bag full of snacks wherever I go. The other day, though, I did go to…

Spicy Acorn Squash Soup

Spicy Acorn Squash Soup

Brief pre-post disclaimer: I know I’ve been mostly posting foodstuffs, and that this is a blog that encompasses more than food, but Whole30 has basically taken over my life. I am going to be posting a book review soon, though, as well as some stuff about being in my MFA. Also—only 10 days left of Whole30! Not that I’m counting or anything. Anyway, here you go! I’ve been starting to feel like eating vegetables is a huge hassle, even though I…

Whole30 Halfway Update

Whole30 Halfway Update

Whole30 is going pretty freakin’ well. I am halfway through, and I feel great. Sometimes, lunch is still hard, because I pack it and take it to work and am used to eating throughout the day, so it’s hard to tell if I’m actually hungry after eating, or just emotionally hungry, but once I can fight through the afternoon, I’m solid. I haven’t been needing as much coffee, I haven’t been craving foods as much, and I do feel a…

Turkey Burgers!

Turkey Burgers!

First thing you should know about me: I hate burgers. I hate ground beef, I hate ketchup, I hate American cheese, I hate mustard. There is nothing about a traditional burger that I like—and before you protest BUT BEE. THERE ARE GOURMET BURGERS. THERE ARE NONTRADITIONAL BURGERS. HOW CAN YOU BLANKET HATE BURGERS? ARE YOU EVEN AMERICAN? It’s the texture. It’s just. Bleh. I don’t like anything that has ground beef in it—meatballs, spaghetti sauce (don’t even get me started…

Green Goddess Dressing

Green Goddess Dressing

If you are doing Whole30, and you, like me, generally do not gravitate toward vinaigrettes for your salads, you might be having some trouble finding a good salad dressing. I was, too. I made a ginger dressing, and it was tasty, but it just didn’t have the right consistency. So I stopped eating salads for a few days, realized that I was not eating enough vegetables, and decided that I needed something creamy or all salads were going to be…

Book review: The Paper Magician Trilogy

Book review: The Paper Magician Trilogy

I won’t say that The Paper Magician trilogy (by Charlie Holmberg) were the greatest books I’ve ever read. They’re not even really the greatest books I’ve read recently—although, possibly the greatest books I’ve read recently for the first time, if recently is in the past few months alone, and doesn’t take short story collections into consideration, and also doesn’t include the third in this trilogy. I will, however, say that The Paper Magician was AWESOME, and if you like fantasy lit at all, it’s a…
